Barnwood Trust calls for Community Convenors

Barnwood Trust is developing an innovative community building programme called Jubilant Stories, which seeks to discover stories of people across Gloucestershire who have come together to build inclusive communities. The Trust believes that these inspiring stories should be recognised and as a result wants to use Jubilant Stories to celebrate the achievements of local people in building successful communities.

To unearth these stories Barnwood Trust is looking for volunteers from across the county to hold conversations within their communities. This involves meeting with five or six friends or neighbours and sharing stories of how people have come together to make life better.  The Trust is particularly interested in stories that demonstrate how people with disabilities and mental health challenges have been included in communities.

Dame Janet Trotter, Lord Lieutenant of Gloucestershire, who is chairing the project said:

‘This is a fantastic opportunity for the county to demonstrate the effort Gloucestershire people go to in making their communities inclusive. We hope that the project will inspire even more residents to contribute their skills and talents to help their friends and neighbours in their community.’

Jubilant Stories is part of Barnwood Trust’s ten-year plan Unlocking Opportunities, which seeks to create the best possible conditions in Gloucestershire for people with disabilities and mental health challenges to make the most of their lives and ensure they are able to live the life they choose in welcoming communities. Through sharing stories of how people support each other, we hope to inspire others to share their stories and offer encouragement to those who want play an active role in their community.

Barnwood Trust is inviting local residents to take part in the project, by joining as a volunteer convenor to hold a community conversation.

Richard Holmes, Project Manager for Jubilant Stories said:

‘We’re looking for people from across the county who are passionate about community life, easy to chat to and very personable. They might already be playing an active role in their village or want to make more of a difference in the town where they live. All a ‘convenor’ needs to do is attend a short training workshop, arrange to get together with a few neighbours, and share the stories they discover with us. It couldn’t be easier!’

To volunteer to take part or recommend a friend to join us as a ‘convenor’ call 01452 634018 or email info@jubilantstories.org.
